Chapter three · Evidence

What the record can actually say

A promising lab result and a small human study are not the same as a proven treatment. As of September 2026, epitalon had no FDA approval.

Stacked green horizontal bands become shorter toward the top, where the approval level remains open.
The closer a question gets to whether epitalon actually helps people, the less proof there is.

Each point and its source

The record, one claim at a time

The gaps matter as much as the findings.

What it is

A small lab-made peptide

Epitalon is made from four amino acids, the building blocks of proteins. It was modelled on epithalamin, an extract from cattle. The extract comes from the pineal gland, a small gland in the brain that makes the sleep hormone melatonin. The FDA treats epitalon and that extract as two different substances.

Approval

The US product record

As of September 2026, no company held FDA approval for epitalon, and no official US drug label existed.

Pharmacy rules

A withdrawn request is not a green light

Compounding means a pharmacy mixes a medicine to order for one patient. Someone had asked the FDA to let pharmacies use epitalon this way, then took that request back.

As of September 2026, epitalon was on the FDA page listing withdrawn requests, with the agency's safety concern still printed beside it.

FDA staff, looking at epitalon as a possible sleep treatment, recommended in writing that pharmacies not be allowed to make medicines from it. That was a staff opinion, not a final FDA decision.

In plain words: as of September 2026, epitalon is not on the list of ingredients pharmacies are allowed to use, and no final FDA decision had added it.

People

Only a few small studies

The FDA's 2026 search found three human studies that gave epitalon to people: two used an under-the-tongue spray in night-shift workers, and one used injections near the eye in people with inherited eye disease.

The US government keeps a public list, called a trial registry, where studies in people are recorded.

As of September 2026, no epitalon study was listed there.

Sleep

A urine result changed; sleep was not measured

In one study, forty women aged forty to fifty who worked nights and had low melatonin, the body's sleep hormone, used a spray for twenty days.

Afterwards, a substance the body makes when it breaks down melatonin rose in their urine.

But the study did not measure sleep and did not report safety data, and the FDA called it small and short.

Long life

The human story is about a different substance

The well-known human longevity reports used epithalamin, often with another extract. They were not studies of epitalon.

Safety

The answer is unknown

No proper study in people has shown that epitalon is safe.

The FDA also raised a cancer worry: epitalon is reported to lengthen telomeres, the protective tips on the ends of chromosomes, and longer telomeres are generally linked to a higher risk of cancer.

No long-term cancer study in animals has been done, so this is a reason for caution, not a case of cancer seen in a person.

Claim check

The sentence to slow down

The leap

“It lengthens telomeres, so it reverses ageing.”

That jumps from cells in a dish to a whole-person benefit.

What the record supports

Telomere results come from cells grown in lab dishes, not proof of longer or healthier human life.

A separate 2025 lab reported telomere lengthening in normal cells and breast-cancer cells, which is one reason the finding needs caution rather than celebration.
